RESUMO

Dasypogon is a widely distributed Palearctic genus. This contribution reviews the species from Central Europe. Two species are identified, including one new species-Dasypogon diabolicus sp. nov. An identification key of the Central European species and descriptions of the male and female of both species are provided along with illustrations of the habitus and male and female terminalia. An updated map with species distributions is presented, and a new corrected list of synonyms of D. diadema is proposed. The following new synonymy is established: Leptarthrus brevirostris (Meigen, 1804) = Dasypogon caudatus Bigot, 1881 syn. nov.

RESUMO

We report on new findings of nearly 50 species that represent four families of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea, which were collected during an expedition to western Tajikistan that was carried out in June and July 2014. Rhyssemodes transcaspicus Rakovic, 1982 is recorded from the country for the first time. Moreover, we describe and illustrate the differences in the external morphology between Euonthophagus gibbosus (Scriba, 1790) and E. koshantschikoffi (Reitter, 1891), the latter of which has a doubtful systematic position. In the collected material of approximately 1,000 specimens, more than 90% of the species and 95% of the individuals belong to the family Scarabaeidae. The other species represent the families Geotrupidae, Glaphyridae, and Hybosoridae.

RESUMO

Sertoli Leydig cell tumor of the ovary, is a rare neoplasm from the group of sex cord-stromal tumors of the ovary, accounting for less than 1% of all ovarian tumors. Among the Sertoli Leydig cell tumors, we distinguish a separate group of tumors secreting α-fetoprotein (AFP). The young 24-year-old woman presented to the Clinical Department of Gynaecological Endocrinology at the University Hospital in Krakow due to secondary amenorrhea, hirsutism and worsening abdominal pain for several months. During the admission draws attention was drawn to the abnormal level of testosterone, AFP and the revised structure of the ovary in the ultrasound. After a preliminary diagnosis, expanded pelvic MRI was performed, which found an isolated tumor derived from Sertoli Leydig cells. The patient was enrolled to unilaterally remove the right ovary by laparotomy. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining confirmed the diagnosis of Sertoli Leydig cells tumor, and in pathological examination we found glandular mucosa cells of the colon. Owing to scientific reports on the stromal tumors of the ovary, we decided to perform genetic testing and verify the patient's karyotype. In the follow-up 90 days after the surgery, levels of testosterone and AFP were correct. In case of Sertoli Leydig cell tumors, especially in young women of childbearing potential, special attention should be paid to Anti-Mullerian hormone testing before surgery, as well as genetic diagnostics to exclude disorders of sex development.

RESUMO

New data on the distribution, biology and ecology of the longhorn beetles occurring in southern and eastern regions of Kazakhstan are presented together with a list of 78 species that were collected during two entomological expeditions conducted in May and June 2017. New localities of some rare taxa endemic to this region of Asia, such as Psilotarsusbrachypterusbrachypterus (Gebler, 1830), Stenocorusminutus (Gebler, 1841) and Dorcadioncrassipescrassipes Ballion, 1878 are given. Exocentrusstierlini Ganglbauer, 1883 is recorded from Kazakhstan for the first time. Moreover, the occurrence of three species: Amarysiusduplicatus Tsherepanov, 1980, Rhopaloscelisunifasciatus Blessig, 1873 and Saperdaalberti Plavilstshikov, 1916, which were recently found in the country, is also confirmed. Furthermore, high-quality photographs of several unique taxa, i.e. Psilotarsusbrachypteruspubiventris (Semenov, 1900), Xylotrechusadspersus (Gebler, 1830), X.alakolensis Karpinski & Szczepanski, 2018, Anoplistesgalusoi (Kostin, 1974), A.jacobsoni Baeckmann, 1904 and Obereakostini Danilevsky, 1988 along with images of their habitats and feeding galleries are also presented. New localities of species considered serious pests or invasive, such as Turaniumscabrum (Kraatz, 1882) and Trichoferuscampestris (Faldermann, 1835), respectively, are also given. A new synonymy is proposed: Cerambyxscalaris Linnaeus, 1758 = Cerambyxhieroglyphicus Pallas, 1773, syn. n.

RESUMO

Xylotrechus (Kostiniclytus) alakolensis sp. nov. from East Kazakhstan is described. Distinguishing characters from closely related species are presented and discussed. The habitus, male genitalia and habitat of the newly described species are illustrated. The new species differs from X. (K.) arnoldii mainly due to its denser pubescence, stockier body sculpture, shape of the scutellum and shorter metatarsomere 1. It can also easily be distinguished from X. (K.) medvedevi inter alia by its smaller eyes, sparser pubescence of the pronotum and elytra, shorter 3rd antennal joint and more elongate, acute lobes of the protarsomere 3. Moreover, there are distinct differences in the morphology of the male genitalia in both cases. Furthermore, the Kostiniclytus subgenus consists exclusively of allopatric representatives and the new described species is distributed about 1,000 km from the known localities of most of the related taxa.

RESUMO

New data on the distribution, biology, and ecology of the longhorn beetles occurring in Mongolia are presented together with a list of 35 species that were collected during a one-month entomological expedition in August 2015. New localities of some rare taxa endemic to Mongolia, such as Eodorcadion dorcas dorcas (Jakovlev, 1901), E. humerale impluviatum (Faldermann, 1833), and E. intermedium intermedium (Jakovlev, 1889) are given. High-quality photographs of several rather unique species, i.e., Pachytodes longipes (Gebler, 1832), Eodorcadion maurum australe Danilevsky, 2014, E. oryx (Jakovlev, 1895), Monochamus impluviatus impluviatus (Motschulsky, 1859), and M. sutor longulus (Pic, 1898) along with images of their habitats or feeding grounds are also presented. Furthermore, the ecological role of the fireweed Chamaenerion angustifolium (L.) Scop. in the case of boreal anthophilous cerambycid species is highlighted for the first time.

RESUMO

Phytoecia (Pilemia) kruszelnickii sp. nov. from Greece is described. Distinguishing characters from closely related species are given and discussed. Moreover, Phytoecia (Pilemia) moreana Breuning 1943 stat. nov. is distinguished as a separate species based on morphological and structural differences. According to the results of our research, P. kruszelnickii is distributed exclusively within the continental part of Greece (Thessaly region) and P. moreana only occurs in the Peloponnese peninsula. However, the taxonomic division and distribution range of Phytoecia (Pilemia) hirsutula (Frölich, 1793) require further research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A non-invasive estimation of central aortic pressure and echocardiographic parameters, and appropriate interpretation thereof make it possible to determine the status of the vascular wall and myocardium. These parameters are early markers of unfavorable remodeling of the cardiovascular system. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the central aortic pressure and echocardiographic parameters of overweight/obese children (with or without concomitant arterial hypertension). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 84 children (mean age: 15 years) - 45 with primary arterial hypertension, 39 normotensive, and 38 controls. Central aortic systolic (cSys) and diastolic (cDia) pressures, pulse wave augmentation index (Aix@75), peripheral resistance, pulse wave reflection and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were determined by means of brachial oscillometry. A number of echocardiographic parameters were recorded. RESULTS: Obese children with arterial hypertension showed the highest values of cSys, cDia and PWV, as well as interventricular septal end-diastolic thickness (IVS), left atrial diameter (LAD), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), elongation index and cardiac output (CO). Patient age, cSYS, cDIA and LAD were identified as significant predictors of PWV. The groups did not differ in terms of Aix@75, peripheral resistance and pulse wave reflection values. CONCLUSIONS: Children with overweight/obesity present with elevated values of cSys, PWV, LVMI, LAD and CO. The risk of these abnormalities is further increased due to concomitant arterial hypertension.

RESUMO

New data on distribution, biology, and ecology of some little-known cerambycid species, collected in the western part of Tajikistan, are presented. Arhopalus rusticus (Linnaeus, 1758) is recorded in Tajikistan for the first time. New localities of species considered pests or invasive species such as Aeolesthes sarta (Solsky, 1871) and Xylotrechus stebbingi Gahan, 1906 are also given. The list of the taxa collected by the first author during many years of field research in Tajikistan as well as photographs of poorly known species from his collection, including some endemics, are additionally provided. Furthermore, high quality photographs of some extremely rare species that were collected during our expedition, i.e., Turkaromia gromenkoi Danilevsky, 2000 and Ropalopus nadari Pic, 1894, with images of their habitats or feeding grounds are also presented for the first time.

RESUMO

We present a case of a woman with primary amenorrhea. Ultrasound imaging showed a uterus of normal size but bands of connective tissues at the site of ovaries. A genetic test was done which revealed the XY karyotype. Swyer syndrome was diagnosed. The patient did not report for the follow-up visits. Three years later, the woman reported back because of increasing abdominal circumference. The patient underwent an operation. Radical hysterectomy was performed. Histopathological examination showed dysgerminoma and gonadoblastoma on the left gonad and dysgerminoma on the right one. This case report presents the natural history of Swyer syndrome.

RESUMO

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) and primitive neuroectodermal tumour (PNET) are now considered to be the same tumour and usually occur in long bones. Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma is an extremely rare neoplasm, accounting for 1% of soft tissue sarcomas, with most common location in the thorax. Gallbladder cancer (GBC) represents the most common type among the biliary tract cancers with a poor prognosis even among patients undergoing aggressive therapy. We present study of extraskeletal ES/PNET found in the hilus of the liver of an elderly, diagnosed one month prior with GBC woman. The patient underwent two cycles of chemotherapy SAIME/SAVAC for ES and thereafter was operated. During three-year follow-up no recurrence of ES/PNET has been reported. However, two years after chemotherapy the patient suffered a relapse of adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder and thus received palliative chemotherapy of gemcitabine and cisplatin. After 16 months of recurrence she died. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of ES/PNET located in the hilus of the liver and as a synchronous neoplasm.

RESUMO

Orbital diseases may be divided into congenital defects of the orbit, infectious and inflammatory diseases, orbital tumors (including malignant and benign tumors) and injuries. Idiopathic inflammatory syndromes are often encountered within the orbit and are usually classified as orbital pseudotumors. The etiology of pseudotumors of the vision organ is unknown. Infectious agents, autoimmune disorders and improper healing are taken into consideration in the pathogenesis of this disorder. Thanks to detailed studies conducted in recent years, a new disease syndrome was identified in 2001. It is known as IgG4-related disease, and its differentiation is based on the analysis of IgG4 levels in the affected tissues. Orbital locations of the disease were first reported in Japan as late as at the end of 2009. This finding triggered the European studies on this subject. To date, no such studies have been conducted in Poland. The starting study population consisted of 167 patients with isolated infiltrative tumor diseases within the orbital region treated at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of the Medical College Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Detailed analysis and diagnostic screening for IgG4-related disease was performed in a total of 17 patients diagnosed with orbital pseudotumor.

RESUMO

Despite cardiopulmonary resuscitation guidelines and their regular updates, the results of cardiac arrest victims treatment are still disappointingly poor. Complex treatment including providing artificial ventilation, circulatory support and prevention of secondary damage from ischemia and hypoxia is a complicated process and its result is unpredictable. The aim of the paper is to present the main steps in post-resuscitation syndrome treatment including ventilatory and circulatory stabilization, central nervous system protection and prognostic value of biochemical and neurophysiological tests.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: MALT lymphomas were classified for differential diagnostics of IgG4-dependent disease due to their exceptional predilection to intraorbital localization. Therefore, the goal of our studies was large retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with MALT lymphomas within the orbital tissues, since no such studies have been conducted in Poland. MATERIAL/METHODS: The starting study population consisted of 167 patients with isolated infiltrative tumor diseases within the orbital region treated at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of the Medical College Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The immunohistochemical assays using anti-IgG, anti-IgG4 and anti-CD138 antibodies were used to estimate the IgG4+/CD138+ and IgG4+/IgG+ ratios. RESULTS: Of all the studied and analyzed patients, a final group of 19 patients with orbital MALT lymphomas was selected to undergo diagnostic examinations for IgG4-related disease. Detailed analysis and diagnostic screening for IgG4-related disease was performed and results meeting the criteria of IgG4-dependent disease were obtained in 10 out of 19 patients with the diagnosis of MALT tumor established on the basis of immunohistochemical assays. CONCLUSIONS: MALT lymphomas are the most common of all lymphomas occurring within orbital tissues. In this study, results consistent with the criteria of IgG4-related disease were obtained in approximately 50% patients with immunohistochemical diagnosis of orbital MALT lymphoma.

RESUMO

Abstract Primary adenocarcinoma of the vermiform appendix is a rare clinical condition. It usually presents as an acute abdominal process or as a mass in the right lower quadrant. The gross pathologic and microscopic characteristics of this disease are the same as for colon carcinoma and carry a serious prognosis. We report a case of a 64-year old male patient presenting symptoms of acute appendicitis. The patient underwent laparoscopic appendectomy that revealed a severely inflamed appendix. Histopathological examination has shown that it was a poorly differentiated, high grade adenocarcinoma invading the periappendicular fat. According to the histopathological findings, a right hemicolectomy was further advised and performed. Right hemicolectomy is the generally recommended method of treatment for invasive adenocarcinoma of the appendix.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Natriuretic peptides have an increasing role in assessing cardiovascular conditions. The number of papers addressing their role in the evaluation of children with syncope of unclear etiology is sparse. The aim of this study was to determine whether measuring atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and the inactive form, N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration in children admitted due to differential diagnosis of syncope can be helpful in establishing the most probable cause of this condition. METHODS: The study included 88 patients between 9 and 18 years of age hospitalized due to syncope. The control group comprised 25 healthy children. In order to identify the cause of syncope, children with this condition were subjected to cardiologic and neurologic evaluation, and ANP and NT-proBNP concentrations were determined. RESULTS: The syncope group and the controls did not differ significantly in terms of natriuretic peptides concentrations. Similarly, no significant intergroup differences in natriuretic peptide concentrations were documented between children representing various types of response to the tilt test, and between the subgroups of patients with syncope of various origins. CONCLUSION: Analysis of natriuretic peptides concentrations in children with syncope does not result in unambiguous findings that would enable establishing accurate diagnosis.

RESUMO

AIM: The main goal of this study was assessment of vascular structure of uterine leiomyomata localized between outer myometrium and endometrium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was carried out on thirty two human uteri collected upon autopsy. Vessels were injected with synthetic resin, next corroded and coated with gold, finally observed using scanning electron microscope. Next ten uteri were injected with acrylic emulsion and studies using immunohistochemical staining for von Willebrandt's factor. RESULTS: Vascular structure of outer myometrial leiomyomata was quite similar to those observed in the middle of muscular layer of uterus, characterized by relatively dense 'vascular capsule', consisted of flattened vein, arterioles and capillaries. CONCLUSIONS: Structure of outer myometrial uterine leiomyomata was similar to those observed during growth within myometrium.
